Forklift Battery Safety
The huge industrial sized batteries used to run electric lift trucks must be charged regularly and correctly maintained. Safety procedures must always be followed while somebody connects the battery to the charger. It is important to check battery fluid levels.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
Eye protection is important for anybody working with a lift truck battery. Full protection includes goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The right way to protect clothes and skin from leaked acid or other residue is to wear an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash station should be located near the charging area. The route to the station should not be blocked and an employee who is injured must be able to go to the eyewash station from the charging area within 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The battery and charger should be at the same amperage. It should be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
While in the vicinity of a charging area and battery, open fire are prohibited. Do not permit objects like matches or lighters to be utilized when an employee is inspecting the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
It is vital to keep the battery charging area well ventilated. The recharging method can cause fumes to be released. These fumes are both toxic and explosive.
